Language Profile and Mother Tongue Development

To the Parents/Guardians of  all our IS students,

In the language programme all students study at least one modern language in the course of their ISH-career, in addition to English and Dutch. As an international school however, we are fully aware of the greater diversity in our students’ language background. Not only have they at least one mother tongue language and have they often come into contact with other modern languages and cultures than they are presently taught, their  proficiency levels may also differ from language to language, from written to oral skills, from home vocabulary to school subject vocabulary.

It is of great importance that we understand our students’ needs and the different language backgrounds; this may help us explore their linguistic abilities and possible setbacks and is essential for offering support in English as an additional language (EAL). Facilitating further support in both EAL and in Mother tongue clubs  is one of the school’s objectives this year. Language Profiling is an indispensable tool in this process. Information such as exposure to a language, tuition in a language and mother tongue needs need to be recorded and kept in the student’s dossier for teachers to consult. It will also be the basis for what school will offer regarding mother tongue facilities such as MT-clubs.

We therefore kindly ask you to refer to the following links and fill out the Language Profile Form and the Mother Tongue questionnaire respectively. Some parents may have seen the Language Profile Form before, as we did a paper version trial run last year, in Grade 8. For efficiency reasons however, we ask you to fill out the profile again, but this time electronically.
